Biologics such as autologous-conditioned serum (ACS), platelet-rich plasma (PRP), stem cells, and others are increasingly used these days in non-operative treatment for chronic tendinosis, musculoskeletal disorders, osteoarthritis, and other conditions.

They also play increasing roles in orthopedic surgery, In sports medicine, biologics are used to treat tissues such as articular cartilage, bone, ligament, tendon, meniscus in joints, and others.

In the area of biologics, it has become difficult for health care providers to stay current on the latest developments and existing knowledge base on the large range of these substances in terms of their:

  • Definitions
  • Exact composition
  • Important differences among them
  • Indications and associated outcomes
  • Regulatory requirements and status

This book has been written to fill these gaps. Thirty-eight professors, physicians, and surgeons – in the areas of biomechanics, cellular therapy, musculoskeletal disorders, orthopedics, regenerative medicine, sports medicine, and veterinary medicine – as well as law professors, wrote the 11 chapters of this book as listed below. They are from the United States, and England, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, and Norway.

  1. U.S. Definitions, Current Use, and FDA Stance on Use of Platelet-Rich Plasma in Sports Medicine
  2. European Definitions, Current Use, and EMA Stance on Use of Platelet-Rich Plasma in Sports Medicine
  3. FDA Regulation of Adult Stem Cell Therapies as Used in Sports Medicine
  4. Cellular Chondroplasty: A New Technology for Joint Regeneration
  5. Autologous-Conditioned Serum: Evidence for Use in the Knee
  6. Role of Platelet-Rich Plasma in Articular Cartilage Injury and Disease
  7. Use of Platelet-Rich Plasma for Popular Tendon and Medial Collateral Ligament Injuries: Best Current Clinical Practice
  8. Can Platelet-Rich Plasma Enhance Anterior Cruciate Ligament and Meniscal Repair?
  9. How Should We Evaluate Outcomes for Use of Biologics in the Knee?
  10. Biologics Used in Bone Healing
  11. Clinical Decision-Making for Use of Biologics in Orthopedic Practice

In this book, the material is presented in the chapters typically in this format

  • Introduction
  • Discussion of topics, followed by subtopics
  • Summary
  • Practical clinical application (in boxed text)
  • References

This is a short, compact, and handy book, but packed with a lot of information, and visual features such as charts, photos, radiographs, tables, ultrasound images and x-rays.  It is a useful guide and reference source for any professional involved in biologics. It also includes current regulations of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and the European Medicines Agency as they pertain to biologics.
