Interventional oncology is a fast-developing specialty in medicine with numerous new discoveries as the fight against cancer intensifies, and many doctors and patients have become victorious. Bu there is one caveat: patients must get themselves diagnosed as quickly as they get any symptom whatsoever and become suspicious or worried. Many a battle has been lost when the patient is already in an advanced stage of cancer.

The editors of this book write (I’m surprised) that it is fault of the doctors for not getting their patients to come in early enough for detection and treatment: “we frequently receive patients for treatments that could clearly have been better served, and potentially even cured, had they come to our attention earlier in the course of their disease. The fault lies with us, the practitioners.”

“The practice of radiology and interventional radiology in particular, has evolved considerably over the last 20 years,” they observe. Several new therapies have been developed and it has become routine for oncologists to determine if their patients could become candidates for those, after looking at their imaging results.

Chemotherapy, radiotherapy, and surgery have become frequent treatment options for cancer patients. These and other methods of mitigating carcinoma are discussed in detail in this unique, valuable book on this life-saving medical specialty.

The thirty chapters of this book – in which topics relating to detection, evaluation, and treatment options are covered- are organized into six Parts based on the location of the cancer:

  1. Principles of Lacoregional Therapy
  2. Gastrointestinal Oncology
  3. Genitourinary and Gynecologic Oncology
  4. Head and Neck Oncology
  5. Thoracic Oncology
  6. Musculoskeletal Oncology
