Book Review by: Nano Khilnani
The Master Techniques in Orthopedic Surgery series began in 1994. Why was the word ‘master’ chosen as part of the series title? Well, the purpose of the project according to the original series editor Roby Thompson was “to provide direct, detailed access to techniques preferred by orthopedic surgeons who are recognized ‘masters’ in their specialty.”
The standardized format used in the presentation of information both via text and graphics is an outstanding feature of this book, and this series of books.
Chapter 1, Exposure of the Upper Extremity: Humerus, Elbow, Forearm, written by Bernard F. Morrey and Matthew C. Morrey, demonstrates the use of this standardized format.
Chapter 1A, Surgical Exposures of the Humerus starts out by showing you the anterolteral exposure, with these components named below as part of the aforementioned format:
- Introduction
- Indications
- Position
- Landmarks
- Skin Incision
A photo showing where the incision is to be made is presented at the bottom of the page. On the opposite page, another photo shows you that the incision has been made and it presents to you the Technique, with detailed steps.
There are lots of detailed drawings, full-color photographs, x-rays and other visuals in this book with accompanying surgical steps to be taken in performing the surgery. This enables you to get right to the preparatory tasks at hand and into performing the procedures.
Thirty-one surgeons (mostly orthopedic surgeons), and professors of surgery, biomedical engineering, neurosurgery, plastic surgery, and sports medicine wrote the 40 chapters of this book that are organized around seven Parts, named below. These authors are mainly from the United States, as well as Canada, France, Spain and Switzerland.
