Sitting in my office, drinking my coffee, surrounded by photos of family, friends and movie stars, I am thinking about how we envision our goals. Everyone I meet dreams a lot about what they want to accomplish in life—how they want to live better, buy a larger house, drive a better car, and run a successful business.
They dream and fantasize about it, but how many sit down and draw up a concrete, detailed, realistic plan to achieve their dreams? Unfortunately, these planning visionaries are few and far between. Dreams are visions of what we want today and in the near future. When we want something in life, be it material or not, we must plan early, clearly, and with research and introspection.
I have said many times in my business columns and at my seminars, “If you don’t plan you plan to fail.”Some people are surprised when I tell them that I have met people with inferior ideas than them who became far more successful. “I have met people with lesser dreams than you,” I sometimes say, “But it doesn’t matter how good your dream is, if you are just sitting home thinking about it, you are never going to be successful.”
Every day people with inferior dreams succeed. They succeed because their plan and implementation is better, not the dream itself.
How often do you see a product on a TV infomercial and say, “I can do better than that!” You probably can do better than that. You just don’t sit down and research how to do so. I remember one of my clients had told me his dream was to own the company that he was working for. He researched books and laid out a plan to achieve his goal.
There were a few bumps in the road, but eventually he became the owner by persevering and planning. Despite the negative reactions he got on his upward path, he kept at his plan and constantly tweaked it. As we near the conclusion of 2015, try to tie your New Year’s resolutions into your 2016 plan to achieve your goals. Sit down and write out a plan to achieve your goals. Need some motivation and moral support?
There are many great books to help inspire and motivate you. I recommend the author Tony Robbins. He has written many books that have helped people overcome the fears and challenges that are interfering with them Once you have written out this plan you must work at it every day. Eventually you will accomplish your dream and vision, but don’t be discouraged by setbacks or failures.
The road to success is very rarely a smooth and easy one. If you want to be the best in your field, be it a salesperson, lawyer, accountant or owner of a restaurant you must plan. Have a detailed plan of your dream and vision, work hard, stay positive, love what you do, have fun and be confident in all your decisions. Do all this and you will be successful.
