When couples plan their wedding, they choose a date. It’s an early step that works in business too. Want to plan (and achieve) your goals? Don’t just choose a goal; choose a date too. To date this is my most important column on goals. I am going to help you reach your goals in the next five months. Let’s work together. As Helen Keller said, “alone we can do so little; together we can do so much.”
Here we are in August and most people that I have spoken to have not started working on their annual goals or they have stopped. They make continuous excuses. With five more months to go it is not too late to start working on your goals. I am going to show you a successful formula that I have used with my clients.
In business do you ever see people going to their destination looking backwards? No. Do you ever see business people stand still all day and end off at their destination? No. It cannot happen. So why does it happen when you set goals? You have to always move forward to reach your goals. As Babe Ruth said, “Yesterday’s home runs don’t win today’s games.”
My strategy is a combination of choosing forward-thinking goals, setting a clear date, and keeping a positive attitude. Let’s put a date on when you will reach your goals, and let’s find the courage to remain positive that you will achieve them.
Many of my clients have asked me, “Where do you get your positive attitude?” I learned that lesson from my father, I respond. He always said, “If you are negative you will have negative results; if you are positive you will have positive results.”
Now follow me. You have just become my reader and client. Let’s take your five top goals that you wanted to accomplish in 2015 considering that you only have five months to go. Your goals must be followed by both development of a specific plan and then you have to take action on them.
Here are some goals that my clients vowed to accomplish with my help:
- Ask for a raise. (August 10)
- Purchase or lease a car that I have thought about for the last three years. (October 12)
- Ask your boss for your deserved promotion. (September 9)
- Lose 15 pounds. (October 30)
- Leave job, but find a new job first. (Before you get rid of dirty water, find clean water.)
- Change my negative attitude to a positive attitude in my business and personal life.
