San Antonio, Texas – Over $40,000 was raised recently at the annual charitable gala and leadership conference of the Texas Indo-American Physician Society, Southwest Chapter (TIPS-SW). The money will be used to support local charities, international causes and a new scholarship program.
The annual event sponsored by the doctors, local hospitals and medical vendors here was held on September 15 at the Holy Trinity Banquet Hall. It was attended by more than 450 local Indian physicians and people in medical fields.
TIPS-SW has held this annual charitable event for four years in a row, and has been one of the few local chapters contributing annually to the parent organization, the American Association of Physicians of Indian Origin. Part of the money goes to operate charitable clinics in India and theUnited States.
Drs. Monika Kapur and Shankar Sanka took charge of organizing this event, which had three distinguished speakers.
Dr. Sandra L Oakes, associate professor at in the geriatric division of the department of family and community medicine, at The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, spoke on Geriatrics for the Subspecialties.
Dr. Jennifer Marie Healy DO, assistant professor of medicine and director of palliative education at that health center, ddressed the audience on Communicating the Bad News Effectively.
Dr. Ronald L. Blumoff, a vascular surgeon and adjunct clinical professor of healthcare management at the Jindal School of Management at the Universityof Texasat Dallas, provided the participants with an insightful lecture on Physician Leadership – A Look Within.
The chairperson of the gala and treasurer of TIPS-SW Dr. Hormaz Sanjana, was host for the evening gathering, which had as its theme An Evening in Paris, a tribute to the late great Bollywood actor Shammi Kapoor.
